SUSTAINABLE OWNERS ASSOCIATION PRACTICES

With upwards of 100 HOA’s in Big Sky, HOAs, POAs, property managers, and developers have an opportunity to dramatically increase the climate resiliency of Big Sky. Check out the resources below for more information on different opportunities to incorporate sustainability in your HOA or development project.

    • Sustainability Fund: HOAs can ensure that there are funds available to complete sustainability projects by creating a sustainability fund. This is similar to a reserve fund in that it ensures the community has money to complete large improvement projects. However, in this case, the money is earmarked for sustainability projects, such as a conversion to water-wise landscaping or HVAC electrification in condo associations. This can be incorporated during the HOA’s annual budget process, similar to that of reserve contributions.

    • Home electrification is the process of switching to electricity-powered appliances, from traditional combustion-powered appliances. This is important for the environment and the health of the individuals living in your home because combustion-powered appliances burn fuel and release harmful emissions into the air. While this transition may sound difficult, there are benefits awaiting proactive building owners who choose to embrace these upgrades, including improved occupant health due to fewer released pollutants, savings on your energy bill, increased property values, and the creation of more livable communities.

    • Alpenscapes is Big Sky's go-to resource for creating appealing, alpine-appropriate landscapes that are fire-safe, water-wise, and ecosystem-friendly.

The aim is to use smarter landscaping to produce thriving landscapes and picturesque spaces. As Big Sky continues to grow, native species and fire adaptedness are integral to ecosystem health, while water demand increases, and our water supply becomes less reliable.

  • The City of Bozeman put forth Model HOA/POA Covenants that can be used as a template for any organizations looking to amend their preexisting covenants.
