TRANSPORTATION BEST PRACTICES

Given the driver-centric layout of Big Sky, it’s integral we be mindful of our choices, and make changes where possible. Transportation accounts for almost one third of Big Sky’s emissions. In 2022, emissions from on-road transportation within the Big Sky boundary were calculated to be 55,138 metric tons of carbon. These emissions were the product of 101,758,846 vehicle miles traveled (VMT). As development continues, these numbers are likely to grow if we as a community do not collectively make changes. Check out our tips below on how to approach transportation more sustainably.

  • Commit to reducing single occupancy passenger vehicle trips; register and log carpools and sustainable trips on GoGallatin to receive a gift card each month you commute sustainably.

  • Combine errands into a single trip; walk, bike or use public transportation, such as the Skyline Bus; shop close to home when available.

  • When possible, purchase high mileage, high efficiency, hybrid or electric model when upgrading a personal vehicle.

Purchase carbon offsets from a reputable source when traveling by air.

  • Reduce vehicle idling as much as possible by turning off your vehicle when waiting in school pickup lines, drive thru lines, and avoid warming up your car for more than a minute or two in the winter.
